New Alarm.com Smart Water Valve+Meter unveiled at CES

Alarm.com introduced a new Smart Water Valve+Meter at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on January 5, 2020. The Smart Water Valve+Meter leverages intelligence and insights from other sensors in the Alarm.com system to help reduce the risk of losses from water emergencies, while also improving water conservation efforts by increasing awareness of water usage.

Each year, water leaks cause $9.1 billion in property damage, yet only 6% of homes currently have smart leak detection systems. Research indicates that up to 93% of water damage costs ($8.5B annually) are preventable by adding a smart water solution to security and automation systems. Including the full Water Management solution with an Alarm.com system helps property owners avoid damage from significant leaks as well as health and safety issues from prolonged low-volume leaks. Unlike other “smart” water valves, the Alarm.com Smart Water Valve + Meter fully integrates with the existing Alarm.com ecosystem, which provides added context and intelligence, and does not require a separate app or service. Home and business owners may also qualify for insurance discounts.

The new Smart Water Valve+Meter is an addition to Alarm.com’s Water Management solution. The smart water meter monitors overall water use to detect both large leaks and small drips early and intelligently respond to each issue using other information from Alarm.com. For example:

  • The system uses temperature sensors on the Smart Water Valve+Meter along with HVAC and thermostat information to alert the property owner if there is an emerging risk of frozen pipes.

  • While the property owner is away, the system detects a large leak from a burst pipe and automatically shuts off water to the home to prevent flooding.

  • While the property owner is home, the system detects a small leak from a laundry room and sends a notification but keeps the water on to avoid an untimely interruption.

  • While the property owner is away, the system detects a bathroom toilet continually running and closes the water valve to prevent excessive water usage.

The Smart Water Valve+Meter will be available in the second quarter of 2020.
